A Brief History of Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy (OT) was founded in 1917 with the creation of the National Society for the Promotion of Occupational Therapy. Early pioneers like Eleanor Clarke Slagle, William Rush Dunton Jr., and George Edward Barton believed in using meaningful activities to improve physical and mental health. OT became vital during World War I, helping injured soldiers regain function and reintegrate into society.

Since then, OT has expanded to assist individuals of all ages with various physical, mental, and cognitive challenges. From helping children with developmental delays to supporting adults in recovery and seniors managing aging, OT empowers people to live independent, fulfilling lives through purposeful activities.

Today, occupational therapy is recognized as a key healthcare profession that enhances quality of life and promotes independence for people facing physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges.
